Question 1

Why does OXY react so strongly to oil price moves?

Accepted Answer

As a pure upstream producer, Occidental's earnings are directly tied to realized crude prices. With a low breakeven around $40 per barrel, every dollar above that expands margins. However, the same sensitivity works in reverse: when crude retreats, as seen in recent 5-6% drops, the stock tends to fall in sympathy. The company's operating leverage means that oil price changes are amplified in cash flow and share price.

Question 2

What does the OxyChem sale mean for Occidental?

Accepted Answer

The sale is part of a broader deleveraging effort. Proceeds are intended to reduce debt, which strengthens the balance sheet. However, it also narrows the business focus to pure oil and gas, increasing commodity exposure relative to a more diversified model. The move is viewed positively for balance-sheet health but adds to the single-commodity risk.

Question 3

How does Berkshire Hathaway's stake affect OXY?

Accepted Answer

Berkshire holds a large, concentrated position in Occidental, reportedly around 75% of its stake in the company. This endorsement provides a measure of confidence and can attract long-term investors. However, it does not insulate the stock from oil price swings or fundamental challenges. The presence of a major shareholder can also influence corporate decisions, though the day-to-day price action remains tied to commodity markets.

Question 4

What are the key risks for OXY in the current environment?

Accepted Answer

The primary risk is crude oil price volatility, as recent slides of 5-6% demonstrate. Additionally, the company carries higher leverage compared to peers like Chevron, which is why some analysts prefer the latter. While debt reduction is underway, any prolonged downturn in oil could strain the balance sheet. Regulatory and geopolitical factors affecting oil supply and demand also matter, as does success in overseas expansion and carbon capture initiatives.
