Question 1

What is RSP and how does it differ from a cap-weighted S&P 500 ETF?

Accepted Answer

RSP is the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF. Instead of weighting each stock by market capitalization like SPY or VOO, it gives every S&P 500 company the same allocation. This reduces the influence of mega-cap tech names and increases exposure to mid-sized and smaller large-cap companies. The result is a more diversified portfolio that can behave differently from the cap-weighted index, often with lower concentration risk but potentially different return patterns.

Question 2

Why would an investor choose equal-weight over cap-weight?

Accepted Answer

Investors often choose equal-weight to avoid the outsized impact of a few large stocks. When a handful of mega-cap tech names dominate the cap-weighted index, equal-weight provides broader exposure across sectors and individual companies. This can be attractive if you believe the market will broaden, or if you want to reduce concentration risk. Some also argue that equal-weight has historically delivered higher long-term returns, though that is not guaranteed and has not been the case in the recent decade.

Question 3

What are the main risks of holding RSP?

Accepted Answer

The primary risk is relative underperformance during periods when large-cap growth stocks lead the market, as RSP is less exposed to those names. Because it is equally weighted, it also has higher turnover and may incur more transaction costs. Additionally, if the market remains narrow and tech continues to dominate, RSP could lag. There is also general market risk, and the fund's performance can be affected by sector rotation and macroeconomic factors.

Question 4

How does the current news sentiment affect RSP's outlook?

Accepted Answer

Recent news flow is predominantly bullish, with notable commentary from a well-known investor favoring equal-weight over cap-weight due to tech concentration and potential credit stress. This supports the case for RSP as a relative outperformer if market leadership broadens. However, some neutral items note its historical underperformance and its use as a temporary parking spot, which suggests not all flows are conviction-driven. The overall sentiment is positive, but the absence of technical signals means the bullish stance is based purely on this fundamental narrative.
