Question 1

How does SCHD's dividend growth compare to inflation?

Accepted Answer

Recent analysis indicates that SCHD's trailing twelve-month payout growth is about 1.4%, which is significantly below the 3.4% consumer price index. This means that while the fund pays a dividend yield of roughly 3.2%, the real purchasing power of those payouts is declining. For investors relying on income, this gap could erode their standard of living over time, though the fund's total return may still be positive due to price appreciation. The bearish sentiment in that article highlights this as a key risk to holding SCHD for income purposes.

Question 2

Why is SCHD considered a defensive ETF?

Accepted Answer

SCHD is considered defensive because it focuses on high-quality companies with strong balance sheets, consistent dividend payments, and lower valuations relative to the broader market. These characteristics tend to make such stocks more resilient during economic downturns. One article specifically notes that established dividend payers generally hold up better during recessions, which supports SCHD's use as a defensive allocation. Additionally, its lower volatility and income component can provide a buffer when growth stocks sell off, making it attractive for conservative investors or those nearing retirement.

Question 3

What are the main risks to SCHD's bullish outlook?

Accepted Answer

Two primary risks stand out from recent news. First, the yield on SCHD (around 3%) is less competitive now that 10-year Treasury yields approach 5%, making risk-free bonds a more attractive alternative for income seekers. This could drive rotation out of dividend ETFs. Second, dividend growth is trailing inflation: TTM payout growth of ~1.4% versus 3.4% CPI means the real income from SCHD is shrinking. If these trends persist, they could undermine the fund's appeal as an income vehicle, even if the stock price holds up.

Question 4

How has SCHD performed relative to the S&P 500 recently?

Accepted Answer

According to news analyses, SCHD has significantly outperformed the broader market year-to-date. One article mentions a 28.99% YTD return for SCHD versus 12.31% for SPY, while another references a 27.25% YTD gain. This outperformance is attributed to a rotation into value stocks and the fund's quality screens, which favor companies with stable earnings and dividends. However, past performance doesn't guarantee future results, and the fund's relative performance could shift if growth stocks regain favor.
